Atul Kochhar’s unique talent as a twice Michelin starred chef has changed the way people perceive and experience Indian cuisine.
Taking inspiration from his native India, while continuously researching regional dishes, Atul has managed to combine his heritage with his love of British ingredients to create a unique and innovative modern Indian cuisine.
As the very first Indian chef to receive a Michelin star in 2001, he then went on to open the highly acclaimed Benares Restaurant & Lounge for which he was awarded second Michelin star in 2007. Critic Jan Moir of the Daily Telegraph wrote:
“Benares is notable for the outstanding quality of the ingredients that the kitchen uses and with the abundance with which they are served.”
He instantly shot to fame and has maintained this high level of Indian cuisine for the past six years.
With the success of Benares, Atul has opened other restaurants in London including; Indian Essence, Petts Wood and Sindhu, Marlow. In Madrid, Spain Atul has gone on to launch Benares’s sister restaurant Benares Madrid. More recently, Atul has opened 2 restaurants in Mumbai India called NRI and Lima. Having recipes featured in international publications and many regular appearances on food broadcasts, Atul remains committed to his passion and is constantly seeking inspiration through travel and research.
His work ethic and talent have not gone unnoticed as he has had the privilege to cook for Prince Charles at St.James’s Palace as well as having been personally invited to meet HM The Queen during the President of India’s official visit.
Partnered with both Action Against Hunger and The Prince’s Trust, Atul uses his success and the success of his restaurants as a means to raise awareness and support charitable endeavours.
When not busy with one of his various restaurants or projects, Atul enjoys spending time at home in London with his wife Deepti and their two young children. Continuing to thrive, the next few years look full of exciting new projects for Atul and his team.
